Jean-Pierre Vaujour, truffle grower and his dog
Originally from the Saint-Aulaire commune, Jean-Pierre Vaujour is a farmer but also a truffle hunter. He often opens the doors of his farm to share his knowledge on this supreme mushroom with visitors.
“Every production is the culmination of a dream” explains Jean-Pierre Vaujour. For the excavation sessions (an action consisting of looking for truffles), he works with his dog, a border collie.
The truffle hunter managed to create a unique relationship with his animal, an essential companion in the search for the black diamond.
Through a training based on playing, the dog learned to recognize the smells of the mushroom and knows to fetch out the precious sesame thanks to a rewards and treats system.

“Much more than a job, truffle hunting is a passion of many sacrifices because nature is queen and influences greatly the outcomes of production. There is no miracle recipe - insists Jean-Pierre Vaujour - but it is crucial to have perfect knowledge of vegetal biodiversity and lots of patience.
This is why I had to study to deepen my knowledge of the lands and the diversity of trees, like holm oaks, to obtain better results.”
On the Corrèze markets, it is possible to buy truffles from Jean-Pierre Vaujour but also from other truffle hunters. They also provide visitors with precious tips to help them choose their truffles wisely, and they even share some of their recipes.
