Tennis : Hotel Prices Increase by 114% for Wimbledon

International Edition TourMaG.com (Europe)

Hotel prices in Wimbledon have increased by up to 114 per cent for the Tennis Championships, according to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported monthly by hotel search website trivago.co.uk. Meanwhile, hotel prices decrease across European cities as the summer season begins and travel interest to New Zealand increases for the Rugby Union tour.

Hotel prices in Wimbledon have increased by up to 114 per cent for the 2014 Tennis Championships.

One night during the tournament will cost an average of £205, compared to an average of £125 in the week preceding and the week following the championship.

The most expensive day to book is not for the final, but for the second Monday (30th June). An overnight stay will cost an average of £249, which is a 114 per cent increase when compared to the average of the Monday before the tournament and the Monday following the tournament.

Hotel prices have also doubled on the first Monday (23rd June), when an overnight stay will cost an average of £236 (103 per cent increase).

Hotel prices have decreased across European cities this month as the summer season begins and travellers choose beach resorts instead.

Compared to last month, the most significant price decreases can be found in Seville (down 32 per cent to an average of £69 per night), Lisbon (down 26 per cent to £89), Prague (down 19 per cent to £109) and Cologne (also down 19 per cent to £81).

Some cities are also displaying a significant year-on-year decrease in hotel prices, suggesting prices are generally becoming cheaper in these destinations. Most notable are Istanbul (down 22 per cent year-on-year to an average of £98 per night), Lisbon (down 20 per cent to £89), Madrid (down 12 per cent to £76) and Frankfurt (also down 12 per cent to £81).

Travel Interest to New Zealand Increases for Rugby Union Tour

Hotel searches made by UK travellers to New Zealand have increased by 28 per cent this month, when compared to the same period in 2013.

An increase in travel interest to Dunedin was particularly pronounced, which will host the second match at the Forsyth Barr Stadium on June 14th.

Despite this increase in searches, there is no significant increase in hotel prices in New Zealand this month.

The host cities of Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch and Hamilton show little change in hotel prices compared to last month. When compared to June 2013, prices in Dunedin and Christchurch have even dropped by 20 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively.

One night in Auckland will cost an average of £77 this month, Dunedin £72, Christchurch £79 and Hamilton £65.

Denise Bartlett, Public Relations UK said : “Last month, hotel prices in Lisbon peaked at an average of £1,171 for the Champions League. While it is unsurprising that prices have dropped by 26 per cent this month, it is interesting to note that prices have also decreased by 20 per cent year-on-year.

Hoteliers in Lisbon were criticised for their raised prices last month – it is likely they have now dropped prices so travellers are not discouraged from visiting the city.

Compared to the price hikes in Lisbon last month, Wimbledon hotel prices are fairly reasonable. One night during the tournament will cost an average of £205 and prices have only doubled on two days of the tournament.

The two most expensive days are the first and second Mondays, suggesting Monday is a popular day to watch the championships.”
